Garcia of Brgy 84 San Jose Tacloban City was recognized, Wednesday as one of the 2018 City Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) VIII during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held at the Oriental Hotel in Palo, Leyte.
Garcia copped the award along with two other BNS from different local government units in the region and received a cash prize of 3,000 pesos and a certificate of recognition. She was honored for front-lining the Nutrition Programs of the City Government in her barangay such as the special feeding for underweight pre-school kids ages 2 to 6 years old and the livelihood training program for mothers with underweight kids, among others.
The City has been decisively implementing health and nutrition programs through various initiatives; in fact, it has received the Green Banner in 1999 and 2000, and its first Crown Maintenance Award in 2002.
Through the City Nutrition Office, it has also organized Barangay Nutrition Action Committees in the 138 villages of Tacloban. The CNO likewise spearheaded livelihood training on peanut butter-making, Tablea-making, and Paper Mache Crafts to help augment the income of mothers in the barangays.
Also recognized during the awards ceremony was the Outstanding Provincial Nutrition Officer, and quality nutrition program implementers in the Municipal and provincial levels, while stakeholders received citations for their contribution to the nutrition programs in the region.
Present during the Regional awarding ceremony was NNC VIII program Coordinator Catalino Dotollo, Department of Health Director and Regional Nutrition Committee Chairperson Minerva Molon and representatives of national government agencies and non-government organizations.
