TACLOBAN CITY (CIO) – To keep abreast on safe motherhood and nutrition in pregnancy, the local government of Tacloban through Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez and the City Nutrition Office (CNO) in partnership with World Vision held Buntis Congress and Search for Pretty Preggy Mom 2019 at Robinson’s North Activity Area last July 25.
As part of the Nutrition Month celebration, the said activities aim to provide education on health consciousness to pregnant women, and were intended to increase awareness of the soon-to-be-mothers on the importance of having monthly check-ups to reduce child and maternal mortality.

”In the past years hataas an at maternal mortality rate, so we remind an at mga nanay an importansya an pagpapacheck-up. This is not only for herself, but also for the development of the baby,” explained City Nutrition Action Officer Ma. Lumen Tabao.

“Knowing that being pregnant is a privilege, so mothers should take it as a gift and nurture the child because not all women are given the opportunity to bear a child,” she added.
For the Buntis Congress, CNO invited panelists who not only speak from experience, but also imparted key points to the attendees.
Among the lecturers was City Councilor Elvira Casal, Chairperson of the Committee on Health and Sanitation, who hinted on the passing of a piece of legislation about “1000 Days of Life”; that deals on the wellness of pregnant mothers, child health interventions and importance of parental visit.
Meantime, Niño Archie Labordo, Nutrition Officer of National Nutrition Council and Marife Garfin, a wellness coach, promoted healthy diet and physical activities, and the importance of breastfeeding in infants.

Also present was City Councilor Aimee Grafil who underscored the reasons why being a mother is not a barrier in holding on to opportunities and achieving goals in life.
On the other hand, out of the 10 candidates who joined the search, the 18-year old Lorelyn Ylanan of Brgy. 49 Youngfield stood out was and hailed as the 2019 Pretty Preggy Mom.

“I’m flattered and at the same time thankful. I just hope that this will still continue because this not only gave us confidence, but also served as a gateway for us to be proud pregnant mothers,” expressed Ylanan when asked how she felt after winning the crown.
Runners-up were both 23 years old namely, Mary Leigh dela Cruz from Brgy.100 Scandinavian Village 1 and Angelica Camarines of Brgy.94 Tigbao.

The crowned Pretty Preggy Mom received a cash prize of Php 3, 000, a trophy, bouquet, certificate and gift packs. Also the same were given to the runners-up, but with a cash prize of 2,000 and 1,000 pesos respectively.- CBM/CIO
