Tacloban City Agriculture Office has reiterated the importance of local farmers and fisherfolks being registered in the government’s agricultural and fisheries database to ensure they receive proper support and assistance, especially during times of crisis.

City Agriculturist Romelo Anade said that registration in the Registry System for Basic Sector in Agriculture and FishR is vital for these sectors to qualify for various aid programs from both local and national agencies. Anade emphasized that by registering, they can gain access to numerous forms of assistance, including financial aid, insurance claims, and technical support that are important to their livelihood.

In the wake of the damages caused by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, the office is currently working with the Department of Agriculture Region 8 and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation to assist affected farmers through insurance claims and zero-interest loan programs. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is offering separate assistance for fisherfolks, with registration in the BoatR and Fish-R system serving as the primary requirement for support.

The agriculture office has monitored significant damage to rice fields, high-value crops, and the fisheries sector. According to Anade, a total of P12,953,175 worth of damages was recorded in rice crops, with P1,530,000 in losses to high-value crops. The fisheries sector, particularly fisherfolks’ vessels and gears, suffered P875,150 in damages.

The most affected areas are located in the northern part of the city, including barangays Sto. Niño, Tagpuro, Sta. Elena, Camansihay, and Cabalawan.

In line with this, personnel from the City Agri have been assisting local farmers in clearing debris from their farms to help them recover quickly and prepare for replanting and harvesting.

Per records from the City Agri, there are 268 rice farmers and 2,600 fisherfolks registered in Tacloban City this 2024.
