TACLOBAN CITY – The City Government through the  leadership of Mayor Cristina G. Romualdez, will mark the 50th Anniversary of  the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) tomorrow, August 8, 2017 with a series of activities that includes a Grand Parade and the ASEAN Lantern Lighting Ceremony.

The celebration with the theme: “Partnering for Change: Engaging the World,” will start  with a Grand Parade at 3:30 pm on Tuesday that  will pass through Justice Romualdez Street, then to Rizal Avenue – to Avenida Veteranos, to Real Street and will end with the 6:00 pm commemorative program at the City Hall Grounds.

An Executive Order was issued by Mayor Romualdez on Monday, August 7, 2017 suspending classes in all School Levels on August 8;  as Tacloban was chosen by the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Department of Foreign Affairs to join the synchronized ASEAN Anniversary Celebration.

Meantime, Mayor Romualdez and other City Government Officials will lead the countdown  and subsequent Lighting Ceremony of the ASEAN Lantern,on Tuesday, 7:00 pm; simultaneously with other areas throughout the country.

The ASEAN Lantern that will be mounted in 50 sites throughout the country was designed  by Artist Arvin Quiwa of Pampanga.  Measuring six feet in diameter, its design  incorporates the anahaw, sampaguita, the traditional Mindanao Vinta and the Flags of the ASEAN member-states.

During the program, the ASEAN Hymn will be sung,  and the flag of the 10 member-states of the Association, will be hoisted.   Among other performers during the program, are the  Samleyaw Dance Company, the Leyte Normal University and I love Tacloban Band;   a grand Fireworks Display at 8:00 pm will cap the event

Formed in 1967 by  the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand,  the ASEAN has for its aim the  promotion of political and economic cooperation and regional stability. Six nations joined later, namely Brunei in 1984; Vietnam in 1995; Laos and Burma 1997; and  Cambodia in 1999.
