Tacloban City slates activities for Nat’l Children’s Month Celebration
TACLOBAN CITY (CIO) – The City Government of Tacloban has kicked off activities for the 2017 National Children’s Month Celebration today, November 13, starting with a Mass for children at the Sto. Niño Church.
Other activities slated for the month-long celebration are Parade and Play Ground Demonstration, on November 17 and 29 at the Tacloban City Convention Center (Astrodome) which will showcase the talents of Children from the City’s 71 Day Care Centers.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Bata: Iligtas Sa Droga.”
Among the laudable programs of Mayor Cristina G. Romualdez for Children is the supplemental feeding program which benefits 4,260 Day Care pupils. Lasting a cycle of 120 days,it is being implemented by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and is considered to be instrumental in the drop of Malnutrition Prevalence in the City.
The local Government Unit (LGU) also maintains a Center for abused children (along with a Center for Abused Women) – the only facility of its kind in Region 8 managed by an LGU, which offers psychosocial support and a temporary sanctuary for neglected and maltreated children.
Child Friendly Desks have been instituted as well, in the barangays to render protection services to children; while the City Health Office maintains a network of Health Centers which puts a premium on Child healthcare.
Meanwhile, as recognition for the City’s exemplary programs which champions the cause of Children it is set to receive this November 22, 2017 in Malacanang Palace the Presidential Award for Child Friendly Local Governance .
The celebration of the National Children’s Month is pursuant to Republic Act 10661, otherwise known as National Children’s Month Act and intends to create awareness on the plight and importance of Children in nation building. – Henry James G. Roca
