TACLOBAN CITY – Regional Development Council (RDC) 8 Chairperson Mayor Cristina G. Romualdez convened on Monday, May 29 the first meeting of the Advisory Committee (AdCom) of RDC 8 composed of lawmakers from Leyte,  Samar and Biliran.  The meeting co-convened by Leyte First District Representative Yedda K. Romualdez is seen as a “revival” of the important RDC body  to help firm up the implementation of key projects and generate policy recommendations for legislation. Key directors of National Government Agencies in the Region also attended the meeting held at the Batasan Pambansa.

Eleven out of the 14 Congressmen from Eastern Visayas attended the meeting which discussed the  Philippine Development Plan for 2017-2022 and the Eastern Visayas Regional Development Plan for 2017-2022.

The Congressmen expressed support for the modernization of Tacloban DZR Airport and upgrading of other airports in the region; and the creation of the Regional Transhipment Hub  through the improvement of Naval Port and augmentation of social ports in Ormoc City, Palompon, Isabel and Albuera.  The Budget Proposal of  Eastern Visayas and the Establishment of the  Leyte Ecological Industrial Zone (LEIZ) in Merida, Leyte is likewise being pushed by the lawmakers.

Agreed during the  meeting was the creation of an Adhoc Committee composed of Region 8 lawmakers to discuss priority projects for the Region.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to explore other funding sources for the proposed Inter-Island Link Bridges that would connect Region 8 to other Regions in the Visayas.

It can be remembered that at the onset of her term as Chairperson of RDC, Mayor Romualdez has called on  the participation of all sectors in the Region to help in its socio-economic development. The AdCom is set to convene again this year. -HENRY JAMES G. ROCA/CIO, Photos by CMO
