Change Summit to recognize Drug-cleared Barangays
TACLOBAN CITY – An additional five drug-cleared Barangays, in this City, will be recognized tomorrow, Thursday, September 21 coinciding with the New Beginnings for Change Summit that will be held at the Tacloban City Convention Center (Astrodome). Barangays 50-A, 94-A, 55, 27 and 53 will be recognized along with the 31 Barangays earlier declared Drug-Cleared by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in said activity meant to demonstrate the City’s support to the National Campaign against drugs, criminality, corruption and terrorism.
The event with the theme: “Pagkaurusa para han Pagbag-o Kontra Iligal na Droga, Kriminalidad, Korapsyon, ngan terorismo,” will start with a Martsa tungo sa Pagbabago (Parade of Change) at 6:00 AM in three areas of the City and will converge at the Astrodome; a program will follow shortly after the parade. Participants of the Parade of Change will come from the different City Barangays, City Public and Elementary Schools and Government Agencies. Regional Directors of key agencies are also expected to attend the half-day event.
Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Paulyn Jean B. Rosell-Ubial will deliver the keynote speech on behalf of President Rodrigo R. Duterte; who was earlier invited for the half-day activity but had to decline because of other commitments.
Main highlights of program include the recognition ceremony for Drug Cleared Barangays and the Signing of the Pledge of Commitment which will be led by the City Government and other stakeholders.
Other highlights of the event is Mga Awit at Sayaw ng Pagbabago and awarding of the winners of the Poster, Jingle and Film Making Contests. The MASA MASID App – an online platform for reporting unlawful activities, will also be launched on the same day.
Participating agencies will also set up booth at the venue representing the rehabilitation ‘pathways. With the addition of the 5 Barangays, Tacloban City now has 36 drug-cleared Barangays.
The Summit which is a follow-up to the Anti-Drug Summit organized last year by Tacloban City Police Office is a concerted effort of the City Government under Mayor Cristina G. Romualdez, the Public and Private Sectors to realize the goal of a drug clear City . As of August 2017, there are 4,402 individuals who voluntarily surrendered to the New Beginnings Drug Rehabilitation Program which is in coordination with the MASA MASID (acronym for Mamayang Ayaw Sa Anomalya, Mamayang Ayaw sa Droga) and Double Barrel Reloaded of the DILG and Philippine National Police.– Henry James G.
