MCGR : Sustain gains to improve lives
TACLOBAN CITY – The current Regional Development Council 8 Chairperson and Chief Executive of the lone Highly Urbanized City in Eastern Visayas welcomed the recent announcement of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) that Region 8 is one of the fastest growing region in the country.
In a statement released by the City Mayor’s Office, Mayor Cristina G. Romualdez said the development is promising and encouraging for Tacloban City and Eastern Visayas as a whole.
“This only means one thing—we are finally picking up our pace and all we need to do is to make sure we gain momentum,” said the Mayor.
She added that the recent development is very significant for Tacloban City as it is the economic hub of the region, “This means that we have the opportunity to improve the economic condition that will hopefully translate to better lives for our people.”
As current RDC Chairperson, she said she is focusing on improving infrastructures to encourage more investment, focusing on airports and seaports.
The PSA last week announced that Eastern Visayas’ Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) grew by 12.4 percent in 2016 as a result of the acceleration of the regional economy by 7.7 between 2015 to 2016. This resulted to PHP 172 billion in income and offsetting economic losses incurred from super typhoon “Yolanda” in 2013 making the region one of the fastest growing in the country the report said.
