MCGR to bat for dev’t programs for poor provinces in R8 as RDC Chair
TACLOBAN CITY – Mayor Cristina G. Romualdez said development projects for poor provinces in Samar will be among the concerns she will be focusing on in her term as Regional Development Council (RDC) Chairperson.
In an interview following the courtesy call of National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Director Bonifacio Uy on Mayor Romualdez to hand in a copy of the appointment signed by President Rodrigo Duterte, she said she is honored to be given the opportunity by President Duterte to play a vital role in the development of the Region.
“Maraming dapat gawin (a lot of things needs to be done), like infrastructure and tourism development…upgrading of (domestic) airport to international…promotion of Tacloban as a jump off point to popular ecotourism sites in the Region, “she said of her new role as RDC Chair.
Plans of replicating successful City livelihood programs in some areas in the Region will also be studied, as well as encouraging industries to locate to the region and the creation of more PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone Authority) Zones will be given emphasis disclosed Romualdez.
According to the newly appointed RDC Chairman, Tacloban being a regional hub of the Region plays a lot in the development of the Region…”what happens in Tacloban, matters to the whole region.”
She added that this must have been the reason why she got appointed to the highest policy making body in the Region which coordinates and sets the direction of all economic and social development efforts at the Regional Level.
Tacloban City is the only Highly Urbanized City in Region 8 hosting big industries and educational institutions.
The first meeting of the RDC with Mayor Romualdez at the helm is set for March 22, 2017. The RDC serves as the counterpart of the NEDA Board at the sub-national level. -HENRY JAMES G. ROCA/CIO
