EMB to install 10 Million Ambient Air System in Tacloban
TACLOBAN CITY – A 10-Million pesos Ambient Air Quality Monitoring System will be installed in the City within a month as a result of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed recently between the City Government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Region 8.
The MOA signed last August 6 by Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez and DENR-EMB 8 Director Letecia R. Maceda is in pursuant to Republic Act No. 8749 or the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999 which provides for management of air quality.
According to City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Chief Jonathan Hijada the installation of the air monitoring system is a joint undertaking of the City Government and the EMB intended to monitor the ambient air quality of the City.
Hijada added that the system will be installed at the Balyu-an Grounds and will augment the data provided by the EMB air quality monitoring station in Marasbaras in checking pollutants in the air and in providing data on wind direction and precipitation level.
The EMB will take charge of the inspection and the monitoring of the system and will orient personnel of the City Government on the operation of the air quality monitoring system. It will also provide the real time air quality information to the City Government for use in its air management efforts.
Meantime, the City Government will provide the nine square meter area needed to install the semi-fixed ambient air quality monitoring station.
