City Gov’t to lead 5th Year Commemoration of Yolanda
TACLOBAN CITY (CIO) – To commemorate the 5th Anniversary of Typhoon #Yolanda (international codename #Haiyan), the City Government of Tacloban under Mayor Cristina G. Romualdez has lined up several activities on November 7 and 8, that will include a Memorial Mass and the Commemorative Program at the Astrodome.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on November 7; 4:00 pm officiated by Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Naval Msgr. Filomeno Bactol at the Anibong Shipwreck Memorial.
On November 8, an early morning Commemorative Run, Dubbed “Yolandalagan” will be held from 3:00 – 6:00 am starting at the Astrodome Grounds.
An 8:00 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at the Sto. Nino Parish Church on Anniversary Day and the 5th Yolanda Commemorative Program will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at the Tacloban City Convention Center.
Among the Government dignitaries expected to attend the program is Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Secretary Michael Dino; who will read a message from President Rodrigo Duterte during the event. Senator Cynthia Villar, Presidential Assistant Francis Tolentino, Ilocos Norte Governor, and Senatorial bet Imee Marcos, former Senator Bongbong Marcos, former Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez and several French Embassy Officials have also signified their intention to attend the activities.
Local artists will perform during the program that will be highlighted by a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Astrodome Memorial.
The Astrodome Memorial located near the Tacloban City Convention Center was unveiled in 2015. The marker has a Memorial Wall where the names of Taclobanons killed during the Super Typhoon are etched.
The Tacloban City Convention Center, popularly known as the Astrodome, sheltered 8,000 evacuees during the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda.
Meantime, the traditional simultaneous candle-lighting along the streets of City will also be held 6 p.m. on November 8, to be followed by Yolanda Sundown Memorial (9:00 p.m.) sponsored by 1st District Congresswoman Yedda K. Romualdez.
Classes and work in Public and Private Schools and Government Offices are suspended on November 8 in Tacloban City, following Executive Order 2018-09-131 signed by Mayor Romualdez. – H.J. Roca/CIO
